Behavioral Health Billing Services

Billing for psychiatry, therapy and addiction care involves time-based codes, add-on codes, telehealth rules and payer carve-outs. We handle them so your clinicians can focus on care.

Bill For You RCM provides full-cycle billing for behavioral health practices: eligibility and authorization checks, coding review, claim submission, denial appeals, A/R follow-up and credentialing. Our fee is the greater of $650 a month or 2.99% of collections, with $0 setup.

Reviewed October 19, 2026. Codes and payer rules change; confirm against the current CPT code set and each payer’s policy.

Why behavioral health billing is different

  • Time-based codes. Psychotherapy codes depend on documented session length, so the note and the code have to match.
  • Add-on codes with E/M. Psychiatric prescribers often bill an E/M visit plus a psychotherapy add-on, which has specific pairing rules.
  • Telehealth rules. Place of service and modifiers vary by payer, state and over time.
  • Carve-outs and authorizations. Many health plans route behavioral health to a separate managed-care organization with its own authorization and session rules.
  • Credentialing by clinician type. Psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs, LPCs, MFTs and psychiatric nurse practitioners each have different enrollment and supervision requirements.

Where behavioral health claims get denied

  • The session time documented does not support the psychotherapy code billed.
  • No authorization on file, or sessions exceeded the authorized number.
  • The clinician is not credentialed or the payer effective date has not started.
  • Wrong place of service or missing modifier on telehealth claims.
  • Services billed to the medical plan when the member’s behavioral health is carved out to a separate payer.
  • Missing or unsupported medical-necessity documentation.
  • Timely filing limits missed.

Frequently asked questions

How much does behavioral health billing cost with Bill For You RCM?

Our fee is the greater of a $650 monthly minimum or 2.99% of monthly collections, with $0 setup and no long-term contract. See the pricing page for plan details.

Can you bill telehealth therapy and psychiatry sessions?

Yes. We handle telehealth billing, including place-of-service coding (POS 02 and POS 10) and payer-specific modifier rules. Requirements differ by payer and change over time, so we check each payer’s current policy.

Do you handle credentialing for new clinicians?

Yes. We manage CAQH setup, Medicare and Medicaid enrollment, commercial payer credentialing and re-credentialing tracking. Starting early matters, because a clinician generally cannot bill a payer until the effective date. Learn more about credentialing.

Which EMRs do you work with?

We work with 35+ EMR and practice management systems, including behavioral health platforms such as SimplePractice, TherapyNotes and Valant, as well as Tebra (Kareo) and AdvancedMD. No migration is required.

What is the difference between CPT 90834 and 90837?

Both are individual psychotherapy codes selected by documented session time. Under CPT time rules, 90834 covers sessions of about 38 to 52 minutes and 90837 covers about 53 minutes or more. The documented start and end time should support the code billed, and some payers review 90837 more closely.
